How to Prepare for Your Dog Training Session
For everyone’s safety and to ensure a productive session, please follow these simple steps before your trainer arrives.
Right Collar and Leash
The leash and the collar are essential items for your dog’s training session. Without these two items, it will be hard to control your dog or teach him or her a command.

Flat collar + 6-foot flat leash
Gives you control and helps your dog learn commands

Retractable & bungee leashes
These do not provide the control needed during training
Put a collar on your dog that fits comfortably — not too tight, not too loose.
Attach a sturdy 6-foot flat leash to the collar.
No bungee or retractable leashes — these do not provide the control needed during training.
Not sure which collar or leash to get? Check with your dog trainer for recommendations on the right flat collar and 6-foot flat leash for your dog.
Empty Their Stomach
Right before the training session is not the time to pack your pup with his or her favorite meal or snacks. Let your dog eat well in advance of the session so you can avoid any accidents.
Ensure your dog eats on their regular scheduled time — do not change their routine.
Take your dog out in the backyard for a “restroom” break 15–20 minutes before the training session.
Why This Matters
These steps help keep everyone safe — including preventing your dog from bolting out the door — and set your dog up for a productive, focused training session.
