Puppy Training in Sacramento – Start as Early as 8 Weeks
The first few months of your puppy's life are the most important for shaping who they will become. Early training builds confidence, prevents problem behaviors, and sets your puppy up for a lifetime of good habits. Value Dog Training brings professional puppy training to your home so your puppy learns in the environment where it matters most.
What We Cover in Puppy Training
Housebreaking
Potty training does not have to take months. I teach you a structured schedule and supervision strategy that gets your puppy house-trained as quickly as possible. Most puppies show significant improvement within the first week.
Biting and Mouthing
All puppies bite. It is how they explore the world. But if biting is not addressed early, it becomes a serious problem. I teach bite inhibition, redirection to appropriate toys, and clear communication so your puppy understands that teeth on skin is never acceptable.
Chewing and Destruction
Puppies chew because they are teething, bored, or anxious. I help you identify the cause and implement a management plan that protects your belongings while giving your puppy appropriate outlets for their chewing needs.
Why I Don't Use Crates
I do not crate train, and I do not teach crate training in any of my programs. Puppies cannot learn while in a crate — would you put an infant or a toddler in a crate? Puppies cannot be potty trained in a crate. Crate training can cause more destruction, develop separation anxiety, and make puppies whine, cry, and bark more. Puppies and dogs love to be with humans, and you cannot teach a puppy independence while they are locked in a crate. I teach independence and calm behavior through structure, supervision, and real boundaries.
No Tug of War — Ever
Tug of war promotes nipping, biting, and aggression. I never recommend it. Instead, I focus on engagement through appropriate toys and chew toys — petting, brushing, and structured play that builds your bond without encouraging rough behavior.
Socialization
The critical socialization window closes around 12 weeks. During this time, your puppy needs positive exposure to new people, sounds, surfaces, environments, and experiences. I guide you through safe, structured socialization that builds confidence without overwhelming your puppy.
Basic Obedience Foundation
Down, stand, wait, come, and name recognition. Puppies can begin learning basic commands as early as 8 weeks. Starting obedience early establishes you as the leader and gives your puppy the structure they crave.
Why In-Home Puppy Training Works Better
Group puppy classes at pet stores and training facilities are popular, but they have significant limitations. Your puppy is surrounded by distractions, the training does not happen in your home, and the instructor splits their attention between multiple dogs. The result is that many puppies learn to sit in a store aisle but pull, jump, and ignore you everywhere else.
In-home puppy training solves this problem. When I train your puppy at home, they learn to behave where they actually live. The housebreaking routine is built around your actual schedule. The chewing management plan accounts for your actual furniture. The obedience commands are practiced in your actual living room, kitchen, and backyard.
You also get one-on-one attention. Every minute of the session is focused on your puppy and your specific challenges. I coach you through the techniques in real time, answer your questions, and adjust the training plan based on how your puppy responds. This personalized approach produces faster, more lasting results than any group class.
The 8-Week Advantage
Many trainers and veterinarians tell puppy owners to wait until their puppy is fully vaccinated before starting training. This is outdated advice that can cost your puppy critical developmental time.
The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends that puppies begin socialization and training as early as possible. The critical socialization window begins closing around 12 to 16 weeks of age. Waiting until 4 or 5 months means missing the period when your puppy is most receptive to learning.
You can also take your puppy out in public walking after their second vaccination, which is usually around 9 weeks of age if the breeder gave the first shot at 6 weeks.
Important vaccine update: California state law changed in 2019 — puppies are now required to have their rabies vaccine at 12 weeks (3 months), not 16 weeks (4 months) as previously required. Many veterinarians are still using outdated protocol. Make sure your vet is current.
Value Dog Training does not require vaccination records. Because training takes place in your home, the health risk is minimal. Starting at 8 weeks gives your puppy a head start on housebreaking, bite inhibition, socialization, and basic obedience that makes every stage of their development easier.
Do not wait. The behaviors you prevent at 8 weeks are far easier than the behaviors you have to fix at 8 months.
Training for Every Stage of Life
Puppies
8 Weeks to 6 Months
The foundation stage. Housebreaking, bite inhibition, socialization, and basic obedience. The earlier you start, the easier everything is.
Adolescent Dogs
6 Months to 1 Year
The testing stage. Your dog is pushing boundaries, ignoring commands, and developing new behaviors. Structured training during adolescence prevents lifelong problems.
Adult & Senior Dogs
1 Year and Beyond
It is never too late. Whether your dog needs basic obedience, behavior modification, or a refresher, adult and senior dogs can absolutely learn new skills.
